Adrián came up through the youth programme of Real Oveido and was signed by Deportivo de La Coruña in October 2006. During his stint at Deportivo La Coruña he was loaned to Alavés in April 2008 and Málaga the following season. Adrián played for Deportivo for one final season, and finished as their top scorer, before transferring as a free agent to Atlético in July 2011 on a four-year deal. Like his teammate Godín, Adrián signed another contract with Atlético that extends his tenure to June 2018.
Adrián has played for Spain, both at youth and senior level but failed to make the 30-man provisional squad for Spain in the 2014 World Cup.
