5. Diego Godín

Position: Defender (Centre Back) | Age: 28
2013-14 season statistics: 94 interceptions, 11 blocked shots, 246 clearances

Diego Godín, a Uruguayan international since 2005, started his professional career with Cerro at the age of 17. Three seasons later he was transferred to Club Nacional de Football before being signed by Villarreal in August 2007. By the time Godín left Villarreal to join Atlético Madrid in August 2010 he’d scored 10 goals in his professional league career. He’s currently sitting on a total of 23 goal, 4 of which were scored during the 2013-14 season (including the equaliser in the final season game against Barcelona that ensured Atlético won La Liga for the first time since 1996) Godín initially joined Atlético on a five-year contract, but signed a new contract in November 2013 that should keep him at the club until 2018.

Godín made his debut for Uruguay aged 19 and has been confirmed for the 30-man preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup. He’s earned 76 caps and scored 3 goals for his country.
