The Brazilian Diego Costa, who spent two years with Barcelona Esportivo Capela’s youth team from 2004, began his professional footballing career with the Portuguese team Braga in 2006. However, he didn’t make a single appearance for them as he was loaned out to Penafiel. In December 2006 he was sold to Atlético Madrid but remained on loan to Braga until 2007. Once again, he failed to play a single game for Atlético as thereafter he was loaned to Celta and subsequently Albacete for the next two seasons. In July 2009 Costa was sold to Real Valladolid with a buy-back clause for the end of the 2009-10 season. In June 2010, Costa returned to Atlético but in July 2011 suffered a serious injury to his knee, was unable to play for Atlético and was loaned to Rayo Vallecano in January 2012 until June of the same year. During the 2012-13 season Costa scored 10 goals with 7 assists from 24 club appearances. In the summer of 2013 Costa was granted Spanish nationality

Costa has earned 2 caps for his native Brazil and 1 cap for Spain and has been named in Spain’s 30-man provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup.
