2. Rio Ferdinand
With Bacary Sagna’s departure all but certain and doubts over the future of Thomas Vermaelen, it is widely expected that Arsene Wenger will look to bring in additional defensive cover during this summer’s transfer window. An experienced defender, who will not expect to play week in week out, would be the ideal signing, and Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand could be just the man. Ferdinand has announced that he will not be extending his contract at Old Trafford and so will be available on a free transfer this summer, and his experience and leadership qualities could make him a very useful addition. The squad now has the know-how of winning trophies, but not the experience of a title run-in – and Ferdinand has been there more than a few times. When asked about a potential move to N5 on BT Sport’s coverage of the FA Cup Final, Ferdinand refused to give a definitive no, and the opportunity to stay at Champions League level would be an attractive proposition for him. Even if he were to be a given a short, one or two year deal, his presence in the dressing room would be fantastically beneficial, and so the club should definitely consider making a move for him this summer.
