Coming into this super cup match as FA Cup champions for the 12th time, against the current Premier League holders Chelsea, make no mistake, this IS a game of importance – not only for the confidence and trophy cabinet of the club, but for the sake of THAT dreadful record against Jose Mourinho.

Arguably the closest occasion Wenger have ever come to defeating Mourinho was way back in 2006, at Stamford bridge, when Flamini put the Gunners ahead after 78 minutes, before his goal was cancelled out by Michael Essien 6 minutes later.

They were even close to putting those demons to rest most recently back in April at the Emirates, where there were chances to win the game late on. It wasn’t to be of course, but in August, this is one of three opportunities for Wenger to finally slay the dragon which is Mourinho, and what better occasion than playing with silverware at stake?

A victory over the blues would provide the team with a massive confidence boost, that they can compete against the big sides and therefore set the tone for the season ahead.
