That player is Gary Cahill. A long-term Arsenal transfer target during his time at Bolton, Cahill opted to join Chelsea in his prime and now aged 32 and frozen out by new boss Sarri, Cahill is looking to move and Arsenal are said to be considering him as a short-term solution to their injury woes at the back.Â
For me, it would be a terrible move. Short term solution yes, but Cahill is no longer good enough to play at the level the club
With a back three more regular under Emery, it makes sense to invest in a player that is going to play consistently in the first team and really improve on what we’ve already got. Cahill doesn’t come close to doing that, and like Sokratis and Koscielny, he is towards the end of his career.
Obviously the best players aren’t always available in January and if they are, it tends to be at a premium. But Arsenal are a couple of players away from competing for major honours and it would be worth investing in players at the very top who can really make a difference. Many shunned at the £75million Liverpool invested in Virgil van Dijk, but the Dutchman has made a major difference to Jurgen Klopp’s team and now they look like serious contenders for both the Premier League and Champions League.Â
