Report: Arsenal in talks to sign £60m Premier League star

Arsenal are preparing to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães after holding exploratory talks over a potential summer transfer.

According to the latest reports from a series of reputable sources, the Gunners have been assessing moves for both Guimarães and his Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali, amongst other options, as they look to add one central midfielder before the transfer window closes.

During initial discussions with Guimarães’ representatives, Arsenal are understood to have established that a deal could potentially be completed for around £60million. While Newcastle are yet to receive an official bid, a proposal of less than this was rejected out of hand. Fresh talks are ongoing and the north London club are now said to be considering their next move.

On paper, Newcastle’s public stance appears clear. The Magpies do not want to lose their captain and talisman, while they have already rejected an offer worth around £80m from Tottenham for Tonali earlier this summer.

However, Arsenal’s willingness to continue discussions raises an interesting question.

It would seem unusual for the club to invest significant time exploring a deal if they believed Newcastle’s “not for sale” stance was completely immovable. More often than not, clubs only progress conversations to this stage when they have received some encouragement that a transfer may ultimately be possible.

Whether that encouragement has come from the player’s camp, intermediaries or simply a belief that Newcastle’s position could soften remains to be seen.

The timing also makes sense.

Guimarães turns 29 in November and has just two years remaining on his current contract. While he remains one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders, Newcastle must soon decide whether to extend his deal or risk his value beginning to decline as he approaches the final year of his contract.

A fee in the region of £60m could therefore become increasingly tempting.

Alternatively, Arsenal’s interest may simply strengthen Guimarães’ negotiating position with Newcastle. It’s a familiar pattern during transfer windows, with genuine interest from another elite club often helping players secure improved long-term contracts. If Newcastle are determined to build around their captain for years to come, agreeing fresh terms would certainly reinforce that message.

From Arsenal’s perspective, though, Guimarães represents another clear “win now” opportunity.

Mikel Arteta already boasts one of Europe’s strongest squads, but adding a player of Guimarães’ quality would immediately improve Arsenal’s starting XI. His ability to dictate play, break opposition pressure and combine technical quality with relentless intensity would make him a natural fit alongside Declan Rice, or to provide more respite to Declan.

Unlike some of Arsenal’s younger transfer targets in recent years, Guimarães would arrive as a ready-made Premier League star capable of making an instant impact in another title challenge.

Reports also suggest Arsenal have explored a move for Tonali, while Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi remain under consideration. However, with the club currently only planning to sign one marquee central midfielder, Guimarães appears to be firmly among the leading candidates.

Whether Newcastle ultimately sanction a deal remains the biggest obstacle, but Arsenal’s continued work behind the scenes suggests this is a transfer story that is far from going away.
