Report: Arsenal open talks to sign €50m midfielder as Tonali and Fernandes alternative

Arsenal’s search for a new central midfielder this summer continues to throw up plenty of names, but the latest link could prove one of the smartest options yet.

According to Corriere della Sera, Arsenal have now opened talks over a move for Manu Kone as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen the middle of the pitch ahead of the new season.

Arsenal’s desire to add another midfielder has become increasingly clear in recent weeks, but many of the Premier League options being discussed simply look financially unrealistic. Nottingham Forest are reported to have rejected a staggering £120m offer for Elliot Anderson from Manchester City – setting the benchmark for Premier League midfielder valuations, while Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes continue to carry valuations around the £100m mark.

That level of spending on one midfielder would significantly impact Arsenal’s ability to strengthen elsewhere, particularly in attack, where reinforcements still appear a major priority. As a result, looking outside the Premier League could be the sensible route.

Kone fits that profile perfectly.

The French midfielder only recently turned 25 and is believed to be valued in the region of £40m-£50m. In today’s market, that feels far more manageable for Arsenal, especially for a player entering his prime years with significant experience already under his belt.

There is also less pressure now for Arsenal to sign a completely Premier League-ready midfielder due to the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly in the centre of the park. The academy graduate’s development gives Arteta greater flexibility and reduces the need to spend enormous money on a player already proven in England.

Kone would instead offer Arsenal a different dynamic. Powerful in transitions, aggressive defensively and capable of carrying the ball through midfield, he looks stylistically suited to the Premier League. His athleticism and intensity could also complement Declan Rice extremely well in bigger games.

Roma are not actively looking to lose the midfielder, however. The Italian side reportedly rejected a bid worth just under £40m from Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, though there is growing pressure on the club financially. According to RomaPress, Roma may need to sanction a significant sale before the end of the month.

That could open the door for Arsenal to strike.

Andrea Berta’s extensive knowledge of the European market may also play a key role here. Arsenal’s new sporting structure appears far more focused on identifying value opportunities across Europe rather than immediately paying inflated Premier League prices.

Kone may not carry the same headline appeal as some of the Premier League names being linked, but from a squad-building perspective, this could make enormous sense. Arsenal need quality additions, but they also need balance financially if they are to build a squad capable of competing on every front this season.
