Swansea City have entered a transfer tug-of-war with newly-promoted Brighton in the hopes of signing one of Arsenal’s defensive flops.
The two Premier League sides, who are likely to fight relegation next season, hold a deep interest in Carl Jenkinson according to the latest report from Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel.
Jenkinson has been told he’s free to leave this summer after failing to make any progress in the Gunners first-team despite a number of chances since signing in 2011.
The boyhood Arsenal fan is expected to make a cut to his wages in search of regular playing time in the Premier League following two successful loan stints with West Ham.
Wenger decided to keep hold of the 25-year-old this season but when given the chance to step up in Hector Bellerin’s place, Jenko couldn’t find a performance that sat well with the Arsenal supporters.
And now it looks as if he’ll have the choice between Swansea and Brighton, two sides that can guarantee him at least 35 games during the campaign.
It’s probably too late for him to get a place in the England side so this move is all about finding the right club to be with before entering his peak years at 28 or 29.
Jenkinson was due to join Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace side back in the January transfer window but the transfer fell through after he failed to reduce his wage demands.
Arsenal aren’t fussed about getting a huge fee for the right-back so it will ultimately come down to the player’s decision as the club continue to clear out squad members.
Jenkinson sits on a long list of departures this summer, including Lucas Perez, Calum Chambers, Kieran Gibbs and Joel Campbell.
