Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to seal a €40million (£29.5million) deal for Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez. The Spanish side are likely to accept a bid that large, with the player only a rotation option.
Arsenal have long been linked with a move for Jese, 22 who can play as a striker or on the wings. The Gunners had been targeting Karim Benzema in the summer as they thought he may lack playing time under Rafael Benitez. But it is Jese who has failed to establish himself under the new Spanish manager.
With the European Championships coming up in the summer, Arsenal could offer Jese an escape route with more guaranteed playing time likely to be available at The Emirates.
Joel Campbell’s good form may have changed Wenger’s mind about needing a new forward in January, but Jese’s potential availability and Danny Welbeck’s latest injury setback may force Wenger’s hand.
Arsenal are set to complete a deal for Mohammed Elneny in the next 48 hours. The Egyptian central midfielder will provide a welcome boost to the Gunners stretched midfield options.
