In 2010 he was joint top goal scorer with 14 goals and voted Player of the Year by his fellow players. In November 2010 Finnbogason moved to Lokeren and was loaned to Helsingborgs IF for six months in mid-February 2011 where he scored 12 goals in 17 appearances. In August 2012 he signed a three-year contract with Heerenveen and to date has scored 59 goals in just 70 appearances. FInnbogason was the top scorer in Eredivisie in the 2013/14 season.

Finnbogason has 11 caps and five goals for the U21 Icelandic national team and 19 caps and four goals for the national senior team.
