Joël Veltman, came up through the ranks of his hometown team, VV Ijmuiden, before joining the youth team of Ajax in 2001. He made his first official debut appearance for Ajax in August 2012. During the 2012/13 season Veltman made 32 appearances for Ajax and scored 2 goals. In August 2013 he played for the newly promoted reserves team Jong Ajax but was out for two months with a sustained knee injury. Despite this setback in October 2013 Veltman made his first continental appearance for Jong Ajax in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League. Along with his teammates at Ajax, Veltman was the winner of the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2013.

Veltman has played for the Dutch national team in the U17, U19, and U20 teams and made his debut with the senior national first team in November 2013. Veltman was named in the 23-man squad Louis Van Gaal chose to represent The Netherlands in the 2014 World Cup. He currently holds 18 caps, 2 of which are for the first team.
