4 – Phil Jones
Another player Arsenal could swap Vermaelen for is Phil Jones.
The 22-year-old was deployed in numerous positions for United last season, and performed extremely well for the majority of their campaign. Although Jones has hinted that he sees his future at right-back, the defender has all the attributes needed to play in the heart of a Premier League defence.
Tall, strong, aggressive, and an excellent reader of the game – Phil would be able to compete for a starting place in Wenger’s side from the off. Although his bulky physique suggests otherwise, Jones is no ‘hoof-the-ball’ defender when it comes to play style. His passing is excellent, and his time in midfield for The Red Devils has taught him how to maintain possession under pressure. His adaptability would allow him to cover for Debuchy at right-back too.
Chris Smalling is undoubtedly the most likely player to be included in the Vermaelen deal this summer, but if Arsenal were to show a preference for Jones, United may have to compromise.
