The polar opposite of Smalling – Raphaël Varane is a technically superb centre-back who can ping the ball around effortlessly in his side’s own half of the pitch. He has the pace, drive, and physique that are needed to succeed in the Premier League, and is thought of as one of the most promising defenders in Europe.
The 21-year-old has been linked to Arsenal in previous years, and Arsene Wenger is said to admire his exciting skill set. With our manager looked upon as a living legend by the majority of French players, there is every chance Raphaël would be open to a move to the Emirates this summer.
It is highly unlikely Real Madrid would want to sell this hot prospect, but they will need to sell someone this summer in order to cover their costs and meet the Financial Fair Play regulations. If Arsenal were to make an offer in the region of £20 million, Varane might just be that someone.
