Report Card: Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi Report Card 2016

  • Age: 20
  • Position: Attacking Midfielder
  • Squad#: 17
  • Height: 5ft 11in

Season Prediction:

It’s a difficult one to predict for Iwobi because we don’t want to rush him into the limelight too fast following that terrific breakout season he enjoyed last year. There’s no doubt that he is our rising star in the first-team, and we want to keep it that way for as long as possible. Whilst I don’t doubt he can play a big part in every game this season, Wenger must deploy experience when it matters most and we can’t afford for Iwobi to be getting knocks in confidence at such a young age.

Player Objectives:

Iwobi can play across any one of the three attacking midfield positions, and in the early stages of the League and FA Cup you can expect him to be placed in the number 10 role. Wenger clearly believes it wasn’t just a one-season wonder after rewarding Iwobi with a starting place in the season opener vs. Liverpool. I think he’s rated at the same level of Walcott and The Ox if not better, so it’ll be interesting to see how he can continue to raise his game and keep experienced names out of the picture.

Best Attributes:

His attention to detail and ability to try something new is what makes Iwobi such an exciting player to watch, he’s so fearless he reminds me of Alexis at times. He now understands how and where to play a ball when Arsenal get in and around the area so he’s thinking like a 28-year-old already.

Weak Areas:

Whilst he’s all well and good running at defenders, his lack of physical presence means he’s a prime target to take on, so I would like him to work on his defensive capabilities, just like Ozil did last year and look at the difference it’s made.
