Too Reliant On Alexis? 3 Things We Learnt in Arsenal’s Win Against Sunderland

3. We NEED to sign a Defender in January

Another game, another injury. Kieran Gibbs is reportedly out for six weeks after picking up a hip injury against Sunderland. This is the latest of injuries to Arsenal’s defence, leaving Per Mertesacker, Nacho Monreal and 19-year-old Calum Chambers as the only senior members fit. This means that reserve players will need to be utilised until players return from injury, with right-back Hector Bellerin (also 19) and centre-back Isaac Hayden (19, again!) being the probable replacements. If the defensive crisis does continue into January, it is imperative that Arsene Wenger goes out and signs a defender or two. I would suggest it would be beneficial to sign a versatile defender, much like Chambers, who could cover all positions along the back four. This is a trait that Bacary Sagna possesses, ironically, but he is wasting away on the bench at Manchester City. With Sagna’s City teammate Matija Nastasic, FC Basel’s Fabian Schar and Stuttgart’s Antonio Rudiger all reportedly available, Arsenal should show interest in signing a defender as soon as that window opens in January.
