Opinion: Nine Arsenal first-team players expected to depart this summer

2 – Lucas Torreira

Again, this should be a fairly simple one to get over the line for Arsenal with all parties wanting some sort of move to happen.

Originally brought in as a £26m Unai Emery signing back in 2018, Torreira enjoyed a memorable debut season with the Gunners as a crucial member of the midfield.

But ever since Arteta walked through the door, Torreira’s game time was limited and he’s since been sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina.

The Serie A side were keen to purchase the 26-year-old permanently but failed to action a clause in the loan agreement that would lead to them paying a fee of £12.5m.

Fiorentina thought they’d be clever by waiting it out for Arsenal to agree to a lower fee later in the summer, but nothing has managed to materialise.

Since then, Torreira’s had his squad number taken away from him twice and was given permission to leave Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the US to attend to ‘personal business’ in Italy.

Torreira has since been pictured back in Italy as he looks to facilitate a move following a remarkable 2021/22 season which saw him win three Player of the Month awards for his club.

Reports have suggested Roma are sniffing around the Uruguayan as an alternative to Gigi Wijnaldum, but I think this will most definitely be a permanent move this time with the player having just one year left on his current Arsenal deal.
