Avoid defensive naivety

Now as we’ve seen in games against Manchester United, Swansea City and most recently Monaco themselves, we were defensively naive in those game. We threw too many players forward in search of a goal whislt leaving two of three players exposed to the opposition’s counter attack.

This cannot happen again. We cannot concede another goal by a classic counter attack, we have to be smarter than that. Two of the goals in the first leg were scored through counter attacks, where the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were left detrimentally unprotected by its midfield, and therefore vulnerable to Monaco’s advancing attackers.

There needs to be some sort of sacrifice in the amount of players bombing forward in search of a goal. This means that our full-backs mustn’t both go forward at simultaneously. One of them has to stay back and provide the numbers in the defence, if Monaco find the opportunity to break.
