It doesn’t take a lot for Arsenal fans to get excited over the possibility of a January signing, but when it comes in the form of Jose Gaya, the anticipation is high.
The Gunners are reportedly leading the chase for the 21-year-old who has been tipped as one of Europe’s hottest talents inside an underperforming Valencia squad.
And it’s believed Arsene Wenger is already planning for life after this season, and wants the Spaniard to join North London ahead of his Premier League rivals.
Nacho Monreal currently stands as the boss’ number one choice but with him turning 31 and only Kieran Gibbs as back up, there needs to be a new Plan B and fast.
We’ve taken an in-depth look at exactly who Gaya is and what he could bring to Arsenal, a team that are beginning to build momentum when it comes to having options in every position.
1 – He’s already got international experience
Gaya is yet to make his debut for Spain’s senior squad, but it heavily tipped to come in and replace Jordi Alba in the left full-back role for years to come.
Saying that, Gaya has featured for Spain in every year since Under-16 level and if you liken that to Hector Bellerin’s situation, it can only be a good thing for his mentality.
Having progressed through the ranks at a steady level, Gaya will now have the first team well in his sights with the 2018 World Cup coming up, a massive target for any footballer.
Given Monreal’s age and Alba lacking the ability to really compete at the highest level for two more years, that’s a clear pathway for Gaya to make a statement in the senior team.
Of course, he’s got competition in Cesar Azpilicueta and that’s what turns good players into great players, so his future certainly looks bright on and off the pitch.
