Arsenal fans are over the moon after it was revealed by The Athletic that the Gunners are close to finalising a new five-year contract for Kieran Tierney.
Many Arsenal fans hold Tierney in very high regard and see him as a future captain of the club. The admiration for the 24-year-old only grew when Arsenal fans learned that the player’s wages were set to be £110,000 per week, a very modest amount given his ability and importance to the team.
Tierney had three years remaining on his current contract, but Arsenal wanted to hand him improved wages to reflect his importance to the team, whilst also tying him down to an extra two years.
Arsenal are likely to be very busy this summer with new signings, but the importance of securing Tierney to a new long-term deal cannot be underestimated. It wouldn’t be long before clubs competing in the Champions League came calling for him, and his stellar performance against England on Friday night will have only drawn more admirers.
The only slight downside of Tierney is his injury proneness. Arsenal will hope Tierney can come through Euro 2020 unscathed and be ready to start the new season fresh and firing.
Emile Smith Rowe is another player that the Gunners are hoping to sign up to a new deal shortly. The English midfielder was subject of a £25million bid from Aston Villa last week, but Arsenal are also set to sign Smith Rowe to a new five-year contract.
It’s great to see Arsenal protecting their valuable assets and that despite the club being out of Europe completely next season, the likes of Smith Rowe and Tierney want to stay with Arsenal.
Here’s some of the fan reactions to the deal.
Superb performance from Tierney last night, especially with his injury issue in the build up. Fantastic news about his new five-year contract (see @ChrisWheatley_ and @SamJDean). No doubt in my mind he will be Arsenal captain by the time he’s half way through that deal. pic.twitter.com/zW56s0Muq1
