‘Benzema Is Coming’

This transfer window is starting to bore me, but some people are trying to single handedly keep Arsenal fans entertained, meet Emanuele Giulianelli.

Those of you that aren’t on Twitter might not be aware of the hysteria that can develop from a ‘tweet’. When Emanuele, once considered a reliable journalist – first spoke of the news, many believed him and got overly excited. But it is around two weeks ago that he first said Arsenal had agreed a deal for Karim Benzema. Yesterday, he tweeted ‘Benzema is coming #KB9’, you’d be forgiven for taking that tweet with a crate of salt.

A little look into past tweets from Giulianelli shows that he is far from the most reliable journalist. Occasionally getting transfer news completely wrong, he suggested Kostas Manolas had signed for Arsenal for one.

I’m not saying that Benzema certainly won’t be an Arsenal player this season, but I am saying that this Giulianelli bloke is talking nonsense, and he’s probably loving the attention and added followers he is getting.

There’s certainly truth in the rumours that Arsenal have been in contact with Real Madrid. Benitez is set to bring central midfielder Mateo Kovacic to the club, and some are suggesting that could push the likes of Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jese Rodriguez or James Rodriguez into a striking role. It would though, leave Madrid with no natural striker in the squad – which I find inconceivable to be honest. If Benzema is allowed to leave, I’d expect them to at least sign Fernando Llorente. I also think they want a big signing before letting anyone go, so the future of David de Gea could have an impact on this one.

Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace was a good example of the efficiency Arsenal still miss in front of goal. Benzema would go some way to addressing that issue, whilst also being a striker who can link with the creative talent in Arsenal’s midfield.

Benitez has cast further doubt over a deal though, recently he told El Pais: “Benzema is a great player.

“One of my ideas this year is that he can reach the 20 to 25 goals mark. I am very confident.”
