The 27-year-old has been a target for the Gunners over recent years, and Arsene Wenger has always spoken of his admiration for the Argentinian, who joined the Italian club in 2013.

But with the departure of manager, Rafa Benitez, looking increasingly likely, Napoli are prepared to lose some of their biggest stars and rebuild the club when new management comes in.

Although the club are reluctant to lose their top goalscorer, they have stated they will begin to listen to offers in the region of £40m, according to a report in todays Sport Mediaset.

That price tag is £5m more than what they paid for him when he left Real Madrid two years ago, but it would provide Napoli with an outlet to reinvest in two adequate names up top.

Reports have linked Higuain with a move to the Premier League before, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea all keen on adopting his services.

The striker has an impressive 35 goals in 69 appearances at Napoli, after finishing the season with 28 goals and 10 assists to his name in all competitions.

Wenger could be willing to part with the asking price, after proving he isn’t afraid to splash the cash on big money players, with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil being fine examples.

The Gunners have been heavily criticised by pundits throughout the season that they are lacking a world-class striker, which ultimately could be the final ingredient to ensure they are challenging for the title next season.
