Arsenal have already signed one goalkeeper this summer in Bernd Leno, but according to reports in Spain, the Gunners are closing in on a deal for Yann Sommer.

You may wonder why reports in Spain are reporting about a Swiss player who plays in the German league moving to an English club. But hold your horses it does make a little bit of sense. The report states that Barcelona were hoping to sign Sommer as a replacement for Jasper Cilissen.

Should Sommer arrive it would almost certainly spell the end for both Petr Cech and David Ospina, whom have both struggled to impress consistently since joining the club.

Sommer has been the number one goalkeeper at Borussia Mönchengladbach since he joined from FC Basel in 2014, making 130 appearances for the German club. He’s also racked up 39 caps for Switzerland.

Aged 29, Sommer’s best years as a keeper are ahead of him and he could still improve and seriously challenge Leno for the number one spot.

Whether Sommer ends up at Barcelona or Arsenal, it seems likely that he would be the second choice keeper, especially should he move to the Spanish giants as Ter Stegen is their established number one.
