A Turning Point! 3 Things We Learned From Manchester City Victory

Dropping Szczesny Was Correct

It doesn’t matter who you know that follows football, they all seem to have an opinion on our first choice man between the sticks. And after recent comments made from his father, Wojech Szczesny was dropped when facing Hull City in the FA Cup two weeks ago.

Since then, David Ospina has got his much-anticipated call up, and a chance to show he came to this club to wear the jersey week in, week out. And so far, you can’t really complain with how he’s doing just that.

Three clean sheets in as many consecutive games is something Arsenal haven’t boasted all season, and with Ospina shutting out a hungry Hull and challenging Stoke and Manchester City sides, it hasn’t exactly been a smooth ride for the Colombian.

The Man City match was Ospina’s first away from the Emirates, so he showed good composure to come into an away game with such confidence. The shot stopper took on a number of power shots from the likes of Aguero and late threats from Dzeko, but what really stood out was his discipline at set pieces. Coming out and collecting was only something he would do if he was 100% sure of making the punch, something Szczesny never filled us with confidence with.

If anything I think Arsenal fans can look at this as a win-win. David Ospina is performing and Szczesny can only look on to improve his game in training. He’s had the telling off he needs and now Wenger has shown that places aren’t just ‘up for grabs’. I mean look at Santi Cazorla, he was dropped for one game in late November and has since come back to win December Player of the Month and a world-class MOTM display against Man City.
