Arsenal are looking to recruit in a number of positions this summer. As well as several changes in midfield and defence, it appears the Gunners are also looking to sign at least one new goalkeeper in the coming months.
Last month, we shared the news that according to a report in Holland, Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana was set to join Arsenal imminently. That clearly didn’t happen, but a more recent update suggests a deal is very much still on.
The Ajax goalkeeper is currently serving a doping ban that was placed upon him in February 2021. He recently found out that his ban would be reduced, allowing for him to return to football before Christmas.
Speaking earlier this week, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on The Here We Go Podcast: “They are in touch with the agent (of Onana). They like the player, he’s a serious opportunity but it’s not advanced or closed yet so now Arsenal will talk with people close to Onana, with his agent, to understand the situation. But, it’s not done yet.”
Onana, like several of Arsenal’s players, would be set to compete in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January, therefore even if Onana did sign, he would miss plenty of the season due to AFCON and serving the remainder of his ban.
Therefore you would expect Arsenal to keep hold of Bernd Leno or sign a second goalkeeper if Onana did arrive. The likes of Aaron Ramsdale have also been linked with Arsenal in recent days.
25-year-old Onana is very highly rated across Europe, with his ability to play out from the back widely regarded as one of the best across the continent.
