As if the frustration of Arsenal failing to get anywhere in the transfer market wasn’t enough to handle this week, things are about to get a lot more complicated.
In the most Arsenal way possible, injury has struck once again and now Gabriel faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines which leaves the back four in even more uncertainty.
The Brazilian joins Per Mertesacker on the absentees list after sustaining a nasty looking injury against Manchester City in the final two minutes of stoppage time.
Although no official statement has been made from Arsenal, BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein confirmed that Gabriel will be out of action for 6-8 weeks.
In Arsenal talk that’s the possibility of three months missed and with Laurent Koscielny the only fit and established centre back Wenger is facing a big problem for the start of the season.
Koscielny was already due to miss the opening day game against Liverpool due to him not being at full fitness, leaving Calum Chambers and Rob Holding to step in and be counted.
That is of course if Arsene Wenger doesn’t go out and pick up an experienced centre back in the five days he’s got, but in a weird way the injury to Gabriel may be a good thing.
It’s believed Wenger was stalling over adding a top class player into the defensive area due to the impressive performances laid on by those in pre-season.
But due to the nature of Gabriel’s injury, it’s finally some firepower to send the boss out and sign; with all reports currently linking Shkodran Mustafi as the favourite to join the Gunners.
