Arsenal need to sell some of their stretched assets this summer, to make space in the squad, free up transfer funds and wages. Here, I pick the five players we should cash-in this summer.
Carl Jenkinson
As much as it pains me to admit it, maybe the 23 year-old life-long Gooner’s time as a Gunner may need to come to an end.
Jenkinson’s future at the Emirates was thrown into doubt when he was loaned to West Ham United, for the entirety of the season, as the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers were brought in, in his place.
On top of that, academy graduate Hector Bellerin’s incredible breakthrough has further trimmed Jenkinson’s chances of game time next season. So the situation the England will find himself in once he returns from East London, is having to compete against not one, but two players for the same position.
Although Arsene Wenger has openly admitted his preference of keeping the defender at Arsenal, there is very little chance he’ll even have the opportunity to stake a claim in the first team at all, with the manager not ruling out the possibility of yet another loan spell away from the club.
With Jenkinson valued at around £10m, maybe the best thing for both parties involved would be to part ways for the good of the player’s career, with West Ham reportedly keen on signing the right-back on a permanent basis, after such an impressive season at Upton Park.
