2) Early season form forced Wenger’s hand
Although we didn’t see the complete lack of nous shown last season at Stamford Bridge, this was still a day where Wenger should have set up more defensively and perhaps settled for a draw.
The reason behind not doing this may have been the fact Arsenal started the day six points behind their London rivals. Wenger may have felt that he had to make up ground, so had to play a more attacking formation than he would have liked.
A point at home to Tottenham and another draw against newly promoted Leicester, are results Arsenal should have improved on. With the extra four points two wins would have given them, the tactics surely would have been different.
You would hope that if Arsenal had only been a couple of points behind, then Wenger would have been savvy enough to sit back and play on the counter while being happy with a point. A lack of ruthlessness in previous games cost Arsenal against one of their biggest rivals.
