One of the reasons on why Vermaelen wasn’t the ideal captain was becuase of the fantastic partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny which limited Vermaelen’s games. Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker were captain for majority of the season, a captain must start every game which makes Arteta unlikely with rumours of a defensive midfielder coming in so Per is the clear choice to be captain.
Per Mertesacker has all the attributes to become Arsenal’s new captain, Per at the age of 29 has four maybe five years of playing time left. With Per having the passion and one of the leaders on and off the pitch it is obvious the he is the perfect captain.
