3 Centre Backs Arsenal Could Sign In January To Solve Defensive Crisis

3. Benedikt Howedes

The Schalke captain was part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in Brazil, playing most of the tournament at left-back. However, the 26-year-old is deployed as a centre-back by Schalke. Howedes is described by FIFA’s official website as “a true defensive all-rounder, as he can proficiently play anywhere across the back four”. His versatility is certainly a positive, and an aspect which Wenger would definitely approve of. Problems Arsenal may encounter if they move for Howedes are: a) the price tag (£15-20 million), as he has recently signed a contract which keeps him at Schalke until 2017 and b) he is the club’s captain and may not want to give up the responsibility. Perhaps Arsenal’s German contingent can convince him?
