2. Fabian Schär
FC Basel centre-back Fabian Schär has attracted interest from a number of clubs all over Europe. The 22-year-old Swiss international was impressive in his only game at the 2014 World Cup, a 3-0 win against Honduras, and seems to be among a new generation of talented Swiss players emerging including Xherdan Shaqiri and Josip Drmic. More recently, Schär was instrumental in keeping a clean sheet against Liverpool in Basel’s 1-0 win against the Reds in this season’s Champions League. He is a good example of what the modern defender should be; intelligent, strong and a good passer of the ball, Schär has also been known to be adventurous and score the odd goal. One negative is that he is sometimes rash in a challenge, and often picks up silly yellow cards. However, that does not change the fact that Schär is a wonderful talent who wouldn’t cost an awful lot, with reports suggesting that Basel value the defender at about £12 million.
