There had been some talk of Aubameyang moving to Barcelona this summer with Arsenal’s star man attracting widespread interest and having just 12 months left on his current contract.
However more recent reports have suggested that Barcelona will turn their attention (and funds) to resigning Neymar. The Brazilian seems keen to return to Spain and should Barca have the money and opportunity to bring him back, I’m sure they would – certainly ahead of 30-year-old Aubameyang, who would likely cost in excess of £50million.
But if Arsenal can’t get Aubameyang to extend his current deal then the news of Barcelona looking elsewhere is not good for the Gunners, who will be hoping to start a bidding war for their most valuable asset.
Raul Sanllehi has stressed he will not let more situations like Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez occur – where major players contracts have been allowed to run down to expiry – leaving Arsenal in poor financial shape.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that Arsenal were reportedly set to open contract extension talks with the player and with Barcelona said to be looking elsewhere, it looks promising for Arsenal fans.
Time will tell if Auba stays or goes but it will certainly be a talking point around Arsenal all summer.
