Per Mertesacker has enjoyed the majority of the season as Arsenal’s stand-in captain, after Mikel Arteta suffered a long-term injury which left him out of the picture for the season. Since then, the German international has taken a demanding lead over his squad, and is one of the most influential players come match-day.

He has been a vital part of the defence this season for the Gunners, missing just three appearances in the Premier League, and has had to play with both Monreal and Gabriel when long-term partner Laurent Koscielny suffered some injuries.

Following a poor start to the season, Mertesacker failed to get any motivation in his individual game, and when Gabriel arrived in January he really kicked on. Since then, the vice-captain hasn’t looked back and his stance in the centre of defence has been important for the Gunners revival.

He played the full 90 minutes in Arsenal’s FA Cup final, scoring the third goal which was memorable for the passion he showed whilst celebrating.

The defender will almost certainly retain his starting place next season, but with rumours of another defender joining the Emirates, he could be ready to start stepping down the leading role at the back.
