Arsenal have reportedly tabled a £28.5million bid for William Carvalho, the problem is, Sporting Lisbon had previously offered the midfielder to the Gunners for less than that..
After a season for Sporting Lisbon where Carvalho failed to progress as much as many had hoped, Lisbon were thought to be offering Carvalho to Arsenal for just £22million. The Sun now report that Arsenal have bid a whole £6.5million for him more than that for him – I find that very hard to believe.
Carvalho has a £37million release clause, true – but there is an acceptance from his club that they will not be able to get that much for him. If Arsenal are again interested in the 23 year old, then they should be able to sign him for no more than £22million.
What’s genuine is Arsenal’s interest in the player. The Gunners were heavily interested in the midfielder last summer but third party complications put a stop to the deal. These third party issues have now been removed and it could simplify a potential deal. Arsene Wenger is still weighing up his options with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Geoffrey Kondogbia available for only slightly more.

Carvalho is currently playing for Portugal as an overage player in the under 21 European Championships. He was very good against England earlier this week, as he looked a level above the English midfielders. Carvalho’s effortless running style draws comparisons to Patrick Vieira.
