In what must be one of the most ambitious rumours of the summer, Arsenal have been linked with a £50million move for Manchester United’s Angel di Maria.
Manchester United are reportedly considering selling Di Maria and accept they won’t recoup the full £59.7million they paid for him from Real Madrid last summer.
Despite Di Maria’s struggle to fit in at United, I seriously doubt Louis van Gaal would be willing to sell a player of such quality to a title rival. I’m sure he knows as well as Arsene Wenger that Di Maria can become one of the leagues best players next season. He is also reportedly earning over £200,000 per week – and Arsenal are unlikely to offer him more than £150,000 – so he’d have to be willing to take a significant pay cut.
For what it’s worth, Di Maria would be excellent for us. He’d combine very well with our other midfielders, especially former teammate Mesut Ozil. With the Argentinian turning 28 this season though, he’d be an expensive risk at £50million. If it takes him another couple of years to find his best form then we’d miss out on his prime years.
Overall I think there is no chance of this deal happening, but it’s nice to see the papers being creative again. Despite it seeming ludicrous, we did all laugh when Luis Suarez was first linked with Arsenal, and Mesut Ozil.
Let’s hope Arsenal can get at least one more world class player in before the season competitively kicks off on August 2 against Chelsea in the Champions League.
