Arsenal are still leading the race to sign teenage star, Joe Gomez, despite new competition from Liverpool and Manchester City. Reports suggest a deal could be concluded in the coming week.
The Gunners have been linked to sign the defender in recent months, and now Arsene Wenger is prepared to fight off his fellow Premier League rivals in order to capture the 18-year-old’s signature.
At such a young age, Gomez has made 24 appearances in the Championship this season making him a vital part of Charlton Athletic’s safety from relegation.
It is believed a bid in the region of £8million will please both parties, and the teenager could be sent back to Charlton in a loan move to ensure he gains vital playing time.
The defender has been utilised at both centre-back and right-back, and will be welcome competition for fellow English star, Calum Chambers.
Gomez has featured for his country at U16, U17 and U19 level, and will contribute to the ever-growing English contingent that is being set at the Gunners.
Arsenal have good connections with Athletic after loaning Francis Coquelin out to them and of course, capturing the signature of Carl Jenkinson back in 2011, a similar signing to Gomez.
Jenkinson is set to leave the Gunners once again next season, and multiple clubs have been linked with a move for the full-back.
