Arsenal appear to still want to be involved in the transfer market this month, despite the emergence of young but influential midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.
The 20-year-old has emerged from the shadows and helped spearhead an Arsenal resurgence in recent weeks, with Mikel Arteta going from on the brink – back to a sense of comfort in the space of just three games. The nature of this seasons Premier League means the Gunners are suddenly within reach of a top four spot again and with the right moves this month, Champions League may suddenly be an outside possibility.
To get there, the club need some more creativity and Arsenal fans will be relieved to hear that the reliable journalist David Ornstein says the club are still on the hunt for a midfielder.
The former BBC now The Athletic journalist said in a video (below): ‘At this moment in time Arsenal see Smith Rowe ideally as being back up support, competition for a world class number 10. Filling in where necessary, learning off of them and eventually succeeding them. With Ozil out of the picture.’
It shows the level of fallout between the club and Ozil, who, on the face of it, could have acted as a perfect mentor for Emile this season. Instead it is likely Arsenal will quite rightly look at bringing in a world class creative player.
Any arrival is likely to be a multi-functional midfielder, capable of playing in a variety of position, like Smith Rowe, this would enable the two to possibly play alongside each other at times. It’s clear the Gunners just need more creativity across the pitch, whether that is from deep in midfield, a more advanced 10 role or on the wings.
