Not Pedro: Arsenal ‘Favourites’ To Sign Spanish Winger This Summer

Arsenal are being reported as ‘favourites’ to sign Napoli winger Jose Callejon. Callejon impressed for Napoli last season but he wants to play in the Champions League – something Napoli cannot offer for the upcoming campaign.

The 28 year old played predominantly as a right winger last season for Napoli, but he can play on the left and even as a striker. He scored 11 goals in the Serie A and featured in all 38 league games, starting 33. He is a creative winger that would suit Arsenal’s style of play – he likes to cut inside from wide areas, that’s a quality Wenger likes his wingers to have.

According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno Arsenal are favourites to sign the former Real Madrid forward.

It would be a bit of an odd signing though. He’s 28, he’s not world class, he’s not going to be world class and we have plenty of players who can play where has plays. But Callejon could be seen as an affordable replacement for Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell.

Twice capped with Spain, Callejon is likely to command a fairly large transfer fee. Considering the Italian clubs stance on Gonzalo Higuain, I don’t think they’d accept any less than £20million for him – despite paying just €10million to sign him from Real Madrid in 2013.

Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to add a goalscoring winger to the squad and whilst I’d prefer someone like Marco Reus, Callejon wouldn’t be an awful option.

Personally I don’t see this one happening, although I do think he’d be a decent signing. I think if we add another forward this summer, the player will be world class or nearly world class.
