Khedira has made just five substitute appearances for Madrid this term, with manager Carlo Ancelotti preferring his German team mate Toni Kroos and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric in central midfield. However, Modric has just been ruled out of action for upto three months with a thigh injury sustained in a European qualifier against Italy.

Khedira, 27, insists he has not considered leaving Madrid, despite his contract expiring at the end of the season, while his German team mate and fellow friend Mertesacker is keen for him to move to the Premier League.

“I’m up for more quality Germans to [join] the club,” Merteacker said in a Q&A session on Wednesday evening.

“Ozil and I spoke with Khedira a few times to join Arsenal. His contract is up next summer.”

Khedira has been hampered by serious injuries over the past few years and missed the World Cup final victory against Argentina.

The 27-year-old was targeted by Arsenal in the summer  however the German’s £200,000-a week wage demands derailed the deal and meant Arsenal went into a new season without the required defensive midfielder.
