It is not often a clubs fans would be happy after their captain completed a move to Barcelona – but after a series of unfortunate events for Vermaelen, Arsenal fans were just that as the Belgian defender completed a £15million move to Barcelona.
So why are they happy? For once we avoided selling a quality player to a direct rival in Manchester United and we also managed to make a £5million profit on a substitute who is heading towards his 30’s. Whilst Vermaelen could still perform very well for Barcelona, there is no doubt this deal was a success for the Gunners.
What must not be forgotten though is the fact Arsenal now have just two senior centre backs in their squad, one of which is still on holiday thanks to his World Cup success. This is a concern and you would hope Arsene Wenger would look to address this area before the Premier League kicks off in just eight days.
