Four Young Centre Backs Arsenal Could Sign

4. Fabian Schär

Fabian Schär is my personal favourite from this list. The Swiss-international is also a natural footballer and a similar player to Rekik but more athletic, experienced, and has a better aerial game. He would be a superb choice as our back up to Mertesacker because he starts for Champions League regulars, FC Basel. Another attribute I like of Schär is his willingness to play long balls on occasion. He’d suit Arsenal’s possession philosophy but I can see him linking up with Walcott when he makes those outside-to-inside runs in order to split the opposition’s defence. Schär also seems to have a knack for goals. In the 38 games he’s played this year, he’s scored 6 and assisted 3. That means he takes part in a goal every four games. Not bad for a centre back. Surely that would transfer over to whichever team he joins to expand his career. His market value is about £6.5 million so I could see us getting him for £8 – 10 million.

All of these five centre backs would be welcome additions in my book for their own reasons. Lascelles would fit because he’s a moldable, physical, and cheap buy. (That has Wenger all over it, in my opinion.) Caulker would give us strength, Premier League experience, and more rotation. Rekik would be a player that has huge potential, cheap, and fits our philosophy. And Schär would, again, fit our philosophy, offer something different, experience, occasional goals, and has huge potential. It’s honestly whichever attributes float your boat. Although, it’s more like which would float Arsene’s boat. Who would you choose? Comment below.
