Article written by Steven Scott. Arsenal went through the season with three centre backs. This could’ve ended in disaster. It seems like every year we have injury problems. Lucky for us, it wasn’t our defence this year.
Not only does the club need to consider depth in the centre back position, but also age. Vermaelen, Koscielny, and Mertesacker have an average age of 28.33 and we need to think of long-term successors to them. Here are five possible young centre backs Arsenal could and should be going for. All market values are based on transfermarkt.com.
1. Jamaal Lascelles
Lascelles is a strong centre back which would give some grit to the side. I believe he would be a good fit because he’s already playing championship football with Nottingham Forest and has English football experience. Not only that but I have a feeling Wenger wouldn’t give the 4th centre back too many games, aside from League Cup games, and that would suit a still-developing centre back. The other bonus is that he’d be very cheap. The 20-year-old’s market value is only £490,000. I can see us getting him for £2-4 million. Navigate through this article using the pages below.
