Five Arsenal Players To Watch This Season

3. Alexis Sánchez

Alexis became Arsenal’s second most expensive signing in their history after completing a £31.8m from Barcelona, and their second marquee signing in just ten months. After impressing heavily during his country’s unfortunate World Cup campaign, Alexis had been courted by Arsenal and Arsène Wenger, there were rumours that Liverpool and Juventus were interested in securing his services, but he chose the red and white of North London. It was a signing that the fans were crying out for, and one that will appreciated very heavily and what lame fans fail to realise is that without Arsène Wenger, Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez wouldn’t have joined Arsenal. Alexis offers similar attributes to Theo Walcott, pace, power, all-round presence and his work-rate is incredibly good. He scored twice at the World Cup, against Australia and Brazil respectively, and his side were very unfortunate to lose on penalties against the host nation. But, again he offers a great deal Arsenal lacked last season, pace in behind, power to best defenders and work-rate when fatigue starts to kick in. His stats epitomise why Arsène Wenger wanted to bring him to the club. Making 34 appearances in La Liga, he was Barcelona’s highest scorer last season, behind Lionel Messi, scoring 19 La Liga goals, creating 47 chances and had an average passing accuracy of 80%. Finally, in his three-year stay at Barcelona, he scored 43 times in 83 appearances. The only doubt I have over this wonderful player is will he be able to live up to the extraordinary capacities the Premier League holds and the unnecessary, harsh and inevitable criticism the English media will give him? I believe so.
