Arsenal could be about to make a move for long term midfield target Asier Illarramendi, who is out of favour in Madrid.

A deal for Asier Illarramendi is likely this summer, whether he is to join Arsenal or someone else is another matter. At this stage it looks like Liverpool are in the driving seat, but the Gunners long term interest in the midfielder make them a very possible destination.

Illarramendi is behind the likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and even Lucas Silva in the pecking order at Madrid and the arrival of Mateo Kovacic will see the Spaniard’s opportunities limited further.

Arsenal will face competition from Brendan Rodgers’ side if they were to pursue a move for the playmaker, whilst Real Sociedad are also interested in re-signing the player they sold for €32million. It is thought they have proposed a two year loan deal and that might appeal to Madrid.

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Illarramendi, but were blown out of the water by Madrid’s 32million euros bid. The Gunners may well now re-ignite their interest as Madrid appear ready to sell the Spanish midfielder for around half what they bought him for.

At 25, Illarramendi could be a good long term replacement for Mikel Arteta who turns 34 this season.
