Werder Bremen have expressed their interest in re-signing Per Mertesacker, with his Gunners future looking more bleak with every game that passes by.
The 32-year-old left the Bundesliga club over five years ago to link up with Laurent Koscielny at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, but since then things have been tough.
As well loved as the BFG is around the Emirates, recent seasons have suggested he’s no longer got the ability to cut it in some of Arsenal’s toughest tests.
This summer saw Arsene Wenger go after Shkodran Mustafi, who has instantly secured his place in the back-four whilst pushing Gabriel out of the team in the process.
That business coupled with the likes of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers as back-up in the central role, the chances of Mertesacker getting back into action are minimal.
Step in Werder Bremen, who’s sporting director Frank Baumann has confirmed to newspaper Bild interest in capturing the services of the experienced German.
In the course of Serge (Gnabry’s) transfer, we also talked about his (Mertesacker’s) future.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mertesacker walk out of the club at the end of this season, he’s given everything to it and for that we can only applaud him.
Sadly we may have already seen the last of him on a football pitch, with so many options ahead of him and a long-term injury keeping him out of action until February.
Mertesacker has already entered the final year of his contract and will become a free agent when the season finishes if he isn’t offered something soon.
