Arsenal are set to be given extra transfer funds in January to make sure they sign a defensive midfielder, The Telegraph report.
Jack Wilshere is set to be out for the next three months after injuring his ankle against Manchester United. This means he is unlikely to return to first team action until mid-March. Mikel Arteta has picked up another injury, ruling him out for the next eight weeks. There is some internal concern about Arteta’s long-term fitness.
Abou Diaby looks as if he will never return to the first team, with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Arsenal may need to depend upon youngsters until the January window. When the window does open, it looks like Arsenal will be busy and Arsene Wenger may be forced into spending on a defensive midfielder. Here are the three reportedly on his radar.
1. Yohan Cabaye
Arsenal bid £10million for Cabaye last season and although he is not a defensive midfielder, he could take a similar career turn to Mikel Arteta. Cabaye has the ability to play in more of a holding role, with a great passing range and plenty of energy. He lacks the presence that many fans would like to see though. It is hard to find a player with both physical and technical attributes at the level Arsenal need. The likes of Paul Pogba fit the bill, but he would be far beyond the Gunners budget.
