Arsenal pushing for €20m Serie A defender to be ‘first summer signing’

Arsenal appear to have already turned their attention to strengthening the team this summer and there is a new target in town, according to reports emerging tonight.

Arsenal have had issues at full-back this season, with first-choice duo Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu both missing a significant part of the season through injury. The backup options, Cedric Soares and Nuno Tavares, have done OK in parts, but ultimately cost Arsenal some goals and points.

So one area the club may be looking to strengthen this summer is full-back, especially with European football back at The Emirates next season. According to Scots Abroad Pod, Arsenal are pushing to seal a €20million deal for Bologna left-back, Aaron Hickey.

Other sources in Italy have also linked Arsenal with a move for Hickey. Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, via SportsMole, link Arsenal, alongside Juventus and Napoli, as clubs interested in Hickey.

Perhaps Tomiyasu and Tierney, his international teammate, can help Arsenal win any transfer race.

Arsenal have history with Bologna, having signed Tomiyasu from them last summer and that relationship could come in handy when negotiating this deal. Hickey is only 19 and is actually Scottish, having moved to Italy in 2020.

Despite his young age, Hickey has become very comfortable in Italy and is a starter for Bologna, playing as an attacking left wing-back, he’s scored 5 goals in his 33 appearances this season.

Primarily playing on the left, Hickey can also play as a right back, making him a very useful member of the squad.
