Why Arsenal Must Make A Signing Soon

I am a big believer in getting business done early in the transfer market. So, being an Arsenal fan, I am often left frustrated by the way Arsène conducts his business. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I like to think that if we get our business done early, we will be less likely to miss out on our targets and the players we do sign will have longer to settle down and get to know the team.

Of course, this year is a little different given that there is a World Cup on and generally, business takes a little longer to come about. Though, saying that, Chelsea have already made two top signings. Maybe they didn’t get the memo.

Because of transfer windows over the last decade, many Arsenal fans do get a little impatient and a tad twitching the longer we go without making a signing. We’ve seen players leave, and lesser players come.

In this window, it isn’t even July yet and so far there have been a number of dealings that are causing concern for some Gooners.

We have cut ties with a few players. It would appear that Real Sociedad are buying out the buy-back clause in Carlos Vela’s contract. Johan Djourou completed a move to Hamburg when the club activated the option to buy clause. And, Cesc Fabregas wanted to re-join Arsenal and was promptly rejected by Arsène.

On top of that, it was reported today that Thomas Vermaelen is close to agreeing a move to Manchester United and it is rumoured that Santi Cazorla is open to the possibility of a move to Atletico Madrid.

There are a couple of important points to make concerning these transfers. Carlos Vela was essentially a Real Sociedad player already, having not played for Arsenal for a number of years. We were all glad to see the back of Johan Djourou. It’s nothing personal, he’s a nice lad, but he’s not good enough for Arsenal. We didn’t need Fabregas. Vermaelen doesn’t get a game and the Santi Cazorla rumours are most likely just that; rumours.

However, we are shifting a lot of players before we’ve signed any, which could come back to bite us in the behind. In truth, we won’t miss many of the players that are on their way out, or have already left, but we have lost the security of knowing we have them just in case something backfires.

It is now imperative that we sign all of our targets an begin doing it soon, or some Gooners may not be able to handle the stress.
