Atalanta ‘Really Pushing’ As Arsenal Attempt To Offload Defender

After a failed debut season at the club, Arsenal are looking to cash in on one of their first-team players with a number of clubs interested.

The Gunners are trying to find a solution for Nuno Tavares, who has failed to impress Mikel Arteta following his £7m switch from Benfica last summer.

And according to the latest update from Fabrizio Romano whilst talking to the Que Golazo Podcast, it appears one club are incredibly keen on signing the 22-year-old.

Whilst providing answers on a host of Arsenal topics, Romano confirmed: “Atalanta want this man as their new left-back. Brighton are interested, but Atalanta are really pushing in the last hours, but there is still no agreement. Arsenal always want their conditions to be respected.”

It’s a move that makes complete sense for all parties involved following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko who is likely to compete with Kieran Tierney for the starting spot at left-back.

But it’s the final part of Romano’s update that is most interesting with Arsenal playing hard ball over the deal, ensuring they recoup as much of their transfer fee as possible.

Whilst it may not have been a big gamble, this is certainly an opportunity for Edu Gaspar to show that the transfer policy at the Gunners is changing.

Tavares is hardly the most desirable asset in the market at the moment, following a season that included an embarrassing first-half substitution in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest.

The Portuguese then failed to cement a regular spot at left-back despite it being handed to him on the plate following a long-term injury to Kieran Tierney.

Instead, Arteta opted to go with a makeshift option of Cedric Soares or Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back which forced, two players who are built to play on the right hand side usually.

The sooner Arsenal can wrap this one up the better with the season starting in two weeks time and still many unsettled players taking up valuable spaces in the squad.
