Offers for Mesut Ozil in the summer appear to have been few and far between, but reports now indicate that the Gunners could receive a very interesting bid from Barcelona for their star German.
With Ozil set to leave for nothing if he isn’t sold in January, the Gunners would surely be tempted by a player plus cash bid. Reports from the Daily Star suggest that Barcelona could be set to bid Andre Gomes plus £20million – certainly not a bad offer considering the circumstances of Ozil’s current contract.
Andre Gomes is a player that since moving to Barcelona in 2016, has struggled to break into the starting line up. Often used from the bench, Gomes is a versatile midfield player that plays deeper than Ozil and is more defensive minded overall. I’m not sure he’d be a player that could get in the Arsenal line up right away, but aged 24, there is potential for him to develop into the player that showed so much potential back in his time at Valencia.
If Jack Wilshere does not extend his contract at Arsenal and Mohammed Elneny moves on, then Arsenal could benefit from someone like Gomes being added to the squad – but Gomes is in no way a superstar that would replace the quality lost in Ozil’s departure.
Still, £20million towards a replacement, and a player that would add quality to the squad, is certainly a good offer. If Ozil will not extend his contract, then if I was Arsene Wenger, I’d be tempted to accept the offer, if of course it is true…
